Nice '65 Giulia Super Comes to US

We picked up our new addition, Bianca, form Galveston Thursday. Hit Customs enroute. No problems either administratively or mechanically in 290 miles home. This one has bounced around Europe for 46 years (an August 1965 "early" 1st Series) starting life registered in Italy and making it to Germany more recently. There is a big wad of paperwork in Italian and German that needs translating. We found it, via Roland, in Muenster on AS24. Pulled the trigger in December with an overnight (8 hrs) to make a decision - good cars go fast and you need to be prepared to jump. Her condition is easily sorted to be concourse if we wanted, just a few details to sort out and some cleaning. It's very original but we'll put our money and effort into some mechanical baselining and PM first. Some pics also posted in Sedan thread - hit link under my signature or here. She looks so spindley on the 155 Vredesteins but feels so nimble. Hope to get her in circulation here soon and may take her to the Convention. Happy motoring! More on early driving impressions soon. For a 105, this is a very special car in very nice condition.

At Wallenius dock #14 at Galveston port, and in front of Moody Mansion in Galveston before heading home.

Italian Alfa Assembly but not the Trifecta

Steve, I hope to see all kinds of folks and cool cars at my first Convention and Pre-Tour. Sounds great. Hope to bring the new white Super.

------------------

I assembled the family for introductions today. The red Spider (since 1975) is getting a bit jealous with her new garage-mates . . . but by the end of the day they were all playing well together.

PS: Note the colors and arrangement of the Italian flag for the welcoming party here. While it is an Alfa Italian Assembly, it is not the Alfa Italian "Trifecta" with a white GT (Spider, GT and Sedan in white, red and green). Just wait for the 4th of July!!

Somehow the Spider even makes the Super look big here!

Time Warp Find

In spending some time washing and detailing the new Super yesterday I am amazed at it's blessed condition. By all, it appears to be all original body panels with no repairs and all spotwelds in-place. At some point it's had a nice exterior resto and repaint. For a 46 year-old car the glass, brightwork and interior is amazing. There are no dings on the sump (no sump guard) which is rare. It must have been owned by the Little Old Lady form Meunster (actually the original owner in Italy was a lady). The trunk is original with full mats and original toolset, and all the original dark blue carpets (under front carpet mats) and original snakebite headliner are in. Some PO(s) gave it a graced life indeed. The seats fabric looks slightly different form the fabric, yes fabric, on the upper door panels (two-tone) so I assume they have been re-done but the interior trim is all perfect. It is a time warp car, but still not quite as original and nice as 101/105guy's "S". I have seen that car up close.

The upper engine compartment has been well detailed. But on the lower engine compartment and undercarriage, I'd say there is 46 years of grunge and patina. I am told this is very typical for even a very nice European car. Cleanliness stopped at the threashold of the mechanical for sure. Again, the LOLfM who kept her clean but worried not much about the mechanicals. Much of the mechanical looks original so I hope that is deceiving. It needed air hose clamps and needs a proper brake fluid reservoir. And it needs some new Bollino d'Oro badges. It originally had a S2 rear bumper mid-section which was kindly replaced before shipping. There is a faint smell of bovine barn in the interior so I suspect it was stored in a barn for awhile.

While a nicely sorted car, there are always things to attend to. The generator or regulator went out on the trip home, the brakes are spongy, and the original blue shocks are shot. It feels like an East LA low rider sloshing about and is VERY comfortable on the bumpy rural roads (Kristy says "keep it that way") but needs a little more control with those 155 tires as rural roads do not have much room for drifting and are lined with consequences. So we'll need some suspension work, and other baseline and PM work is in order to ensure it is safe and reliable. With only 88k km (55k miles) but 46 years this picture all fits pretty well. The only addition I can find is a small 4-way flasher switch below the steering cowling; a nice addition. It had a radio but it was mounted in a DIN receptor under the front tray and has been removed. Driving has a few quirks; more on that later. What a fortunate find indeed. A living treasure. Once again, thanks Flanders!! I can see why his favorite is the 1st Series Super.

Il Vecchio, Larry & Derek, thanks for the props. Been doing some undercarriage cleaning - pressure wash and solvent. Aside: If there is one downside of a Euro car it is waxoil . . . I guess it's good over there (not needed here) but there must have been 30 pounds of dirt embedded in it. (Even worse with the green Super.) But underneath it's almost new. Except for brake pads, and some tie-rod ends, much appears original or at least old. Original blue Bianchi shocks with rubber pleated covers. It's so original it blows me away: red-brown Bakelite spark plug connectors, green clear fuel hose, Lodge Gold plugs, hmmm. The generator and regulator appear newish as is the booster (chromated gold-tone - yuck - but I have a few older ones from earlier brake work on the 69). The air hose clamps are new (Highwood) but thankfully not chromated. And it needs a proper brake fluid reservoir and hard-line. Unfortunately the engine bay was a partial resto with new paint feathered about halfway down, including some mild overspray on some wires and stuff down low. Making a list now but will keep it as original as possible.

Derek, as requested, here are some pics of the engine bay and trunk/tools. The lower and rear mats appears new. It all seems pretty original so if you need some go-by shots, ping me. Anybody want to see some glamour shots of rear Dunlop brakes? Who invented those . . . more moving parts than an engine.

If anyone out there spots any other non-original features, please let me know. Tks in advance.

Wow! What a find.

Just 'cause you asked...

*The owner's manual you show is for a series II Super. You should have a Guilia T.I. owner's manual with the Giulia Super supplement. Ebay & Ebay Italia is your friend here.
*The tool kit is missing the double-ended hex wrench. I'll look in my boxes this weekend to see if I have a spate. I've seen others make their own with pretty darn good results. Again, Ebay & Ebay Italia is worth keeping an eye on.
*Your air filter canister should have a transfer on the top advising of when to change the filter. Ebay Italia has full transfer kits on it every week, which is good news.
*Consider getting a vintage looking battery with yellow fill tops, and perhaps putting a large Marelli sticker on the side facing the engine. I've seen these batteries in Muscle Car Review, etc.

Note, these are not criticisms at all- just helpful suggestions to get Bianca up to the perfection it so nearly is!

You are richly blessed to have this timewarp in your garage!

Best,
-Peter

Peter, thanks for that info. Exactly what I asked for! On the manual, I know (print date 10/67) but it will have to do until I source a S1 manual. Were there any in English? On the toolkit, the S2 manual does not show that tool so I'll look around. If you have a spare and a PayPal account that would be great (you sent me some brass wheel nuts a long time ago which will be spares here). I found the decal for the AF canister at Mt. Carmel. It's install is awaiting my internal debate on repainting it satin black, but then again, it's in good shape so I may just leave it. I'd rather have 46 years-old original than concourse. I'll leave over-restored for the rods. And I found a vintage looking sealed maintenance-free battery (LINK) but I chose black caps (so old-school). You can't really see the side with the battery shroud and the fender blocking the side view anyway. I want to sort out the generator problem first.

Keep those suggestions coming! Any source for Spica shocks? It just dearly needs shocks. The headlamps are not Carello (they are on Pinyo) and I can't make out the maker on the front. Any ideas?? It spent its last many years in Germany so they may be a German-legal unit? They say E4 (Euro slant pattern and H4 bulb). Were these originally outfitted with Carellos? And the side-view mirror looks suspect. Way too shiny, and the logo. Spiders after S1's had the Alfa logo so my guess is that it is a later replacement?? What would be correct? The trapezoidal mirrors? Or round without the logo??

Hope to see you at the convention! If I can get it sorted, I hope to bring this one. B

Hi Bruce, thanks for those extra pics. I didnt know the double ended hex wrench was standard either, I thought it was optional due to the fact there are only 6 pockets in the pouch.
Your brake fluid container is not original as it should the fat round one that you can now get through the UK suppliers
I can't see a battery tie down in the photos either?
What a lovely boot area. I am missing the mat for over the rear of the taillights. Is it rubber like the rest of the trunk set?
Will email the correct manuals to you so you know what to watch ebay for, both in English.

Derek, I added a few more pics after your post. I have seen the complete mat sets for Supers on e-Bay (I bought a carpet-set for my 72 from the place, mrfiat.com) and they sell pieces individually. All of them are the same "rope-pattern" rubber. My bottom and rear here look new. The left (drivers-side) fender piece is partially ripped so I'll replace that since it's a good start otherwise. I got a new brake fluid container but it had a defect and is being cheerfully replaced. That gives me time to sort the hard-line on that when it goes in. The battery tie-down is one that rests on the bottom and it may not be original. There are the usual holes on the sides for the poles and metal "strap" tie-down. I'll sort that after the generator problem is resolved and the new vintage-looking battery goes in. The car is so dang original in most other respects, it even has the service coupon booklet pouch on the passenger-side kick panel. So as you can see, I've been a bit distracted from the Super comparisons document we've been working on together with Koenraad and Jorma. Hope to get back to it in awhile, but probably only after the upcoming 6-week Euro trip in Benjamin (see link in sig). My best, B

Great pics, very informative. I will have a look around for the mats I am missing, most of mine are untorn.
There is a rubber piece missing in your photos that fits on the top of the front grille. I bought a NOS piece a while back so I will find it and photograph it for you.
Here are my RHD NOS carellos that are correct for our cars, with the cursive Carello script.

And here is a pic from the Super Supplement showing the battery tiedown. Boy your car is very close to factory original!

Hi,

Attached are photos showing the hex wrench and the manuals which (and others please correct me if I'm wrong) would've come with your car, depending on the country of delivery.

The owner's manuals were supplied in Italian, English, German and French. There's a Giulia T.I. manual on Ebay Italia right now, but no Super supplement.

Battery looks great!

No idea where to source Spica shocks, you might have to but Koni's or Bilstein's and repaint them.

Originally, your car (especially if delivered in Italy) would've come with the script Carello's as Derek has shown atop the T.I. manual, etc. Bianca must've had a later set of outer headlamps installed.

Believe it or not, your car never came with an outside rear view mirror from the factory- those, and seatbelts, were dealer accessory items.

I do recall the brass wheel nut fiasco- my fault. If I come across a second hex wrench this weekend, it'll be my gift to you.

Best,
-Peter
