Good news. The coil wire was at fault. It runs again much like usual. Occasional miss at idle. Hope it will pass smog next week. Previous owner must have put a lot of miles on it, odometer doesn't...

Rough running will not idle

Hello Forum members.

My 86 Graduate was sitting awhile (3 months or more) and now runs terrible. It starts but runs rough and won't idle. Changing out the plugs usually takes care of it, because...

Smog my 86 Spider

Anyone know a Star smog station in the Orange County area that can do the emissions check for a reasonable price? Seems to me $80 is a bit much. My car has been passing the test just fine but I was...

You all are missing the point. Not oil amendments for leaks but for wear...rings, bearings, tappets, chains, etc. I don't think "Hyperlube" is going to damage or swell the seals. I mentioned it's a...

Motor oil supplements

I am about to add a quart of Hyperlube to the crankcase of my high mileage !986 Alfa spider. I'm not sure of the actual mileage because the odometer has not functioned since I've owned it. The engine...

It cranks a bit then starts when cold. When it's shut down for half an hour or so, but warmed up, it will take repeated cranking attempts to restart. I know it's supposed to start with one turn of...

Guess I wasn't clear. Just saying it has a new battery and it does indeed start, but it takes several tries even before getting a new battery. I've cleaned all the grounds I could find including the...

The good news is my 86 Spider now runs fine after a new main fuel pump and filter. I installed a new Bosch 24 battery and the car takes 8 to 10 cranks before it starts. I'll drive a while, make a...

Yes...pump was Bosch for $240, $150 for diagnosing and labor. Some new fuel line at the tank plus tax, and there you are. Could have done this myself for half the cost, but I was "tricked" by the car...

It turns out the main fuel pump would work intermittently and pressure was too low to start the car. New pump and filter plus labor cost me only $447. Problem solved.

I was excited when it started up today after changing out the fuel filter. It ran for 5 seconds only to quit and not start again. Main pump, tank pump and filters are all okay. So what now? More...

Pulled fuel line from the rail and put the end in a bottle. Hit the starter for a while and fuel came out but I think pressure is low. I'll need to buy a pressure gauge and check for ~35 psi. If not...

Yes, there is spark. The engine slowed, sputtered and quit. It's fuel related alright. How can I test if fuel is getting pumped to the injectors? Is there air in the system from my hose replacement?

Just finished more diagnosing steps, here's what I've done:
1) Filled the tank to 1/2 full.
2) Checked the in-line fuse under rear panel. It is the "blade" type from PO.
3) Ran a 12V jump to the...

Rear diff again

Not to beat a dead horse, but I did check back with my Alfa specialist and he then described the drive shaft movement to be way less than he had first said. I raised both rear wheels off the ground,...

I am probably the third owner, but to the best of my knowledge the differential oil never ran low/or out and it took 1/2 pint to top off. Someone suggested adding a small can of STP into the mix.

Rear axle differential

My 86 Spider apparently has a rear differential which is nearly ready to explode according to an Alfa Specialist. He says there is almost a full revolution of the drive shaft before the gears engage...
