I still want to install some period-looking gauges in the clock pod, since mine has never worked. Or maybe replace the guts with a 9v motor from the crafts store and have a battery box under the dash.

Easy job, and yes, be prepared to find petrified gunk inside. I noticed somewhat smoother and faster operation but nothing too profound. They're still glacial in speed.

The lines inside the car are return lines from the vapor canister back to the tank check valve, so they aren't pressurized. Small engine hose should be perfectly fine.

Well, the helmet fans move about 8 times as much air as the computer fan (170 CFM vs 20 CFM), and nearly as much as the primary blower! That's definitely something to consider.
