147 won't start after running dry

it's always annoyed me how the 'warning limited range' on my 147 gives about 5 miles til empty. really not useful on a dual carriageway. Anyhow having run out of petrol i filled a jerry can and returned to the vehicle. When i'd emptied the can i turned on the engine and there was a thud and some smoke, but a neighbour passing said it was probably just a backfire. Erring on the side of caution i put another can's full of petrol in it but it still won't start. Any ideas/solutions (was running perfectly prior to this
