Whether or not people are responsible for the rising CO2 (to say nothing of methane from cows, or water vapor, or other greenhouse gases), governments, corporations, and high finance stands to profit handsomely from all of this. Who will suffer? You. Who will profit? Definitely not you.

It is this intersection of profit potential and actual, material threat to humanity - and the conflict of interest that it presents - that makes a lot of the developments seem bleak.

The following news report reviews some unusual weather:

Arctic freeze and snow wreak havoc across the planet - Times Online

In another story a Chinese official claims that the unusual cold in the Northern Hemisphere is due to "global warming".

Hmmmm?

Exclamation Alert

It has to do with "NEO-CONS", which has been often cleverly employed in response to posts about poor logic and contrived evidence behind the party line about AGW.

Sadly, there could be an alarming increase in "neo-cons".

The late Irving Kristol described a neo-con as a "liberal mugged by reality".

In September NAOO reported: "For the 2009 summer, the average temperature of the contiguous states of 71.5 F was 0.4 F below the 20th century average."

This included comment that for Michigan, Wisconsin and Minnesota it was the sixth coolest summer on record.

Globally, this winter --so far--has been unusually cool.

Reality is doing some mugging.

One year's temperature fluctuation does not change in the longer-term trend.

And, one set of "fixed" computer models also doesn't make a trend.

You know what they say about computers:

One year's temperature fluctuation does not change in the longer-term trend.

But if natural weather events are significant enough to overwhelm the effects of CO2 on weather, it strongly weakens the policy claim that the best response is to limit CO2 emissions.

NOAA report on contiguous states:

Average temperature for December was 30.2 F, which is 3.2 F cooler than the average from 1901 to 2000.

As this thread has commented--this has been associated with the deepest solar minimum since 1913, which has not been included in the mainstream "modeling".

This minimum completed by September. Solar physicists who made the call on the deep minimum consider that the next increase in the solar cycle will be modest and nowhere near previous levels reached with the highest activity in a thousand years.

Stone Henge in England has an axis lined up with the the shortest day of the year. There must have been a reason.

This was some 5,000 years ago and one can imagine the Druid priesthood and their subjects. Cold and damp with the days growing shorter it doesn't take too much understanding of authoritarian government to imagine the sales pitch. Going into the equivalent of December 21:

"With your tithes and feality we can end the dismal shortening of daylight and make things better again."

"Otherwise.........

Lots of ceremony, of course.
