Laughing at myself

I was an engineer at the Westingouse nuclear fuel plant from 1982 until my retirement in 2013 and I made a few mistakes over the course of the 31 years. The most infamous was when I inadvertently triggered the nuclear criticality alrm while troubleshooting a UPS (uninterruptible power supply). It resulted in a total evacuation of the plant - 100's of people who had to congregate and be accounted for before being allowed back into the plant after it had been declared safe. It led me to get the nickname "Edvacuation".

A few days ago a former colleague called to say that he had something for me from the plant and yesterday he gave me this plaque. The UPS had been decommissioned and he saved the control and had it mounted. The event was embarrassing at the time but it is good to know that my old buddies still get a laugh out of it.

That's fantastic!

Also, it's good to be able to laugh at one's self. Those who do not (or will not) not seem to live life as (the Brits may say) "miserable c**ts."

Thanks for sharing Ed; that is a funny story.

Back in "my laboratory days", my friend and then lab owner Jim Hills had a plaque on his desk that read:

"If all else fails, immortality can always be achieved through spectacular error"

Jim handled the majority of the labs failure analysis cases at the time...mostly automotive but some industrial and was considered a leading expert in the fields of ladder cases and bolt failures. He designed a "safe" ladder as a joke; it was only two 'rungs' high.

Nice!

Wow! At the time, you should of won an award for innovation for creating an unannounced, unplanned safety and evacuation test that no one including plant safety was aware. What better way to assess the true state of emergency readiness. Planned safety drills are so blase and if everyone knows they are coming, what's the point. Very low bar.
Hopefully in addition to your recognition at the time, there was a hefty pay raise as well.

I'm glad you are now receiving the recognition well overdue. Congratulations on your award!
