Cool

For a big city, Vancouver has lots of critters.

Over on the mountain side there are cougars and bears. Throughout the city there are urban coyotes, urban raccoons, urban skunks and urban socialists.

We have rabbits and squirrels (none in attic anymore) near our Alfa house.

Oh! we got our first snow of the season last night down to 19F now.

Feral cats, foxes, raccoons, etc., at beach house area with a couple skunks and oppossum thrown in once in awhile.

Changing the subject I just finishing watching the Shane Salerno doc of J D Salinger on PBS American Masters. Always the man with a much younger women it seems right up to his death at 91. I still have my college copy of Catcher but never thought about taking it with me when I put an end to the life of a Alfa as I parted it out though. It seems like assassin of John Lennon and attempted assassin of Reagan and one other of actor in CA had copy of book with them when they did the dastardly deeds.

It's a lovely -26C (~ -15F) here this morning. We have lots of snow and the ice is terrific for ice fishing! I think it's time to pull on my swim trunks and go find some fish.

Here's how we go ice-fishing around here:

No skunks as they and most of the other smart critters are hibernating. The only animals roaming around here are some bunnies, cats, the odd squirrel and of course college students.

Cool Cold!

We were in Ottawa for a family party on Dec 29.

On Dec 31 we took the train to Toronto, for a departure at 10 PM on the train to Vancouver. It was delayed 24 hours because in Northern Ontario it had been so cold that a rail fractured. At 40 below, even Canadian railroads slow down

On the morning in Northern Ontario it was clear and cold. Plumbing froze and while diesel exhaust is usually unseen, it was so cold that it formed a condensation trail, similar to the exhaust from commercial airliners.

So in sitting in any of the observation cars it was difficult to see past the "fog", but as the day warmed up the con-trail ended.

At Winnipeg, a cracked wheel on one of the sleeping cars was discovered and it took 7 hours to change the car.

The delay turned out to be a benefit as the trip though the Thompson and Fraser Canyons was done in daylight.

Made all the better by a nice bottle of Shiraz.

I have two ex-wives and an ex-almost wife. One of them is a cougar, one is a cow and one is a rabid rabbit. Thankfully, we live in different neighborhoods and even countries.

I'm still with #1 through the stinky and the fragrant. It'll be 35 years this year.

I opted to call the critter getter guy. That way I don't have to sit on my porch with a rifle in the 9 deg. F weather. Although... this is Alabama... and no one would consider it weird to sit on your porch with a rifle.

Unhappy Minor Afflictions

As time goes by, minor problems become inevitable and seem to increase in number.

Whenever someone goes on about my liking salty food, I note that I take "salt-free" blood pressure pills.

For the past five years it as been the need for "gluten-free" breads.

And, as discovered this week, I'm now looking for "gout-free" wine.

Can anyone help?

Sigh,

I can't recommend a wine Bob. I've sort of given that stuff up. I can recommend Shiner Bohemian Black Lager. Umm Umm Good! Probably very scarce in BC. Shiner is kind of a Texas thing although I do find Shiner Bock just about everywhere in Alabama.

As a Texas Aggie, we learn in our fish year that there is nothing finer than a Shiner.

But there is good news! The Havoc hit the Surge's open net at 19:30 of the 3rd period to clinch a 3-1 win to the delight of the home crowd in a packed Von Braun Center! The Havoc won 8 of their 10 games in January to pull into a tie with the Pensacola Ice Flyers for 1st place in the SPHL.

Re--The Gout

Good news.

The Doc has known me for a long time. So he asked what I had been doing differently recently.

At my age I should have had it a long time ago.

On our travels into early January I had not been drinking the usual amount of water.

The problem was not too much wine, but not enough water.

Took some pills for a few days and now all is well.

Glad to hear it, Bob. It's amazing what a lack of water does...for me it makes me light-headed and less able to balance, which is an issue since I have issues maintaining my balance anyway.

A co-worker has gout issues and he drinks "black cherry" juices when in relapse. He said it helps tremendously. Glad to hear it wasn't the wine or you could be out looking for "black cherry" wine.

No wait, too much wine and not enough water Baccus? I can't believe it! Will my Single Malt Nadurra Glenlivet Single Malt @ 108.4 octane do gout too me? I thought the higher the octane, the less chance of detonation and gout knock.
I don't use a lot, just a wee dram on occasion to clean the plugs.
