|Jim G||If the trans in your car doesn't pop out of reverse. Then is fine. Just reuse the 3 gears and the fork.|

|jckevin||Thanks everyone. My bellhousing is fine to use. A lot of the parts in that 78 gear box, can possibly be used...plus other NEW parts. I've got doubts about my reverse gear, for example, and I am told those are really hard to find. For $100 i cannot go wrong if even a few parts in there are good.|

|bianchi2||I think one of the trannys need a belhousing that has holes cut into it for the shift forks to pass thru|

|pantera928||ARwrench beat me to it. 1978 did not have the sensors on the bell housing|

|ARwrench||...and after you rebuild the 78' you will have to use the 83' bellhousing.|

|jckevin||I wouldn't put the transmission in without doing those things first. Reverse is another common issue.|

They are the same. But putting in a trans that hasn`t been rebuilt is a mistake as in general there are two issues that need to be fixed. 1- the first gear syncro design. See the "Sticky" in the trans area. 2- 2nd gear syncros are the most problemsome and should be replaced.

I couldn't quickly find the answer although I'm sure it's here somewhere.
I've got an 83 Spider.
Does a tranny from a 78 work in the 83 or are they completely different? I'm guessing they're not the same.
