alfaparticle Take the plug out of #1 cylinder and put a long zip tie into it so that it is sitting on the piston and the other end is sticking up through the spark plug hole. Rotate the engine until the zip tie reaches maximum height. Look on the pulley and the pointer should be at the P mark. If you consider the P mark to be at 12 O'clock then the F mark should be a little way towards 1 O'clock. Look into the hole with a flash light. If you cannot see the edge of either valves then the distributor rotor should be pointing at #1 plug wire. If you can see valves then it should be pointing at #4 plug wire.

Electronic Distributor installation

Hi all,
I have a 1978 spider and am replacing the duel points distributor with the ID 405 Bosch Electronic distributor. The instructions from Centerline are attached and I have a alfa owners manual that I have attached the info that it has about timing.

So my understanding is I am turning the crankshaft fully so the distributor rotor is at #1 spot on distributor and this is the F mark on the pulley - the static timing mark.
So I was successful manually turning the pulley but the markings on the pulley are only "M" and "I". There is no "F' or "P" marking that the manuals talk about?

Help!! I need step by step instructions, day job is a help there...LOL
