horsewidower With rain possible tomorrow (yipee!!!), I worked on the lights today.

Tail lights are working and so are the dash lights!!! With Dave's guidance, it was easy to find the necessary power from the column switch. Mea Culpa, this is obviously a Bob mistake. (Bob being me) Found the wire from the column switch after dropping the fuse block down. I cleaned the attachment point on the fuse block, plugged it in and Viola! There was light...at the tail end of the car. Very happy with that.

With wind in my electrical troubleshooting sails, I went on and tackled the dash lights. Added a wire between the dash and the fuse block, and woohoo...had dash lights.

Great weekend for tackling the driveability issues. Idle is correct, lights work. Very good progress.

bayalfagtv6 Bob, it was a pleasure seeing you yesterday and riding and driving the GTV6, what great cars these are. Yours had a great feel and throttle response, a pleasure to drive. You may be able to bring he idle down further at the idle adjust I showed you but it may also need to readjust the timing a bit. It may also help those synchros a bit. I'm already looking at changing the exhaust manifolds on mine and going back to stock. May be a good winter project once AC is sorted on the other Italian in my garage. And I'll look around and find that rear body cladding for you.

horsewidower Fantastic day in the bay. Ran down to William of Richmond's house (Patron Saint of the project) to return some manuals and the steering wheel tool. I should have done it several months ago, but life seems to string me along. Fantastic trip down along the Sacramento delta roads. Far cooler than sticking to the valley. We compared notes and then took it for a drive on some really marvelous twisty roads. About halfway through, William took over in order to experience driving the car, as I'm still fighting the brakes, and have a hanging idle. There was some discussion that the idle issue was contributing to the difficulty in shifting.

Consensus is that I need to change the booster, and when we got back he quickly cured the idle issue (a couple of wrenches, used competently, are wonderful things). And, on the return trip, the shifting was better.

I've thought the clutch is close to the end of life, and he confirmed. So that task has to go higher on the list.

Also, it's always fun to see reactions to the car. We had several folks talk to us when we stopped for coffee, and I had more than a few honks and thumbs up on the bay area freeways. I can understand why it's a hotbed of Alfa activity.

horsewidower Spent a little time last night, after putting the LS to bed, trying to find the mystery glitch that makes the engine cut out intermittently. I had fixed the one that was caused by the coil connector, but still had a baffling one that would show up from time to time. I assumed it was ignition, but when it happened the tach still functioned correctly.

I checked all the ignition wiring and then took it on a test drive down to the hardware store. When I got back in to go home, it appeared, worse than ever. Essentially, you'd give it throttle and it would die while sitting there in the parking lot. Which usually tells you that there is a fueling problem....the engine is getting air but not the requisite corresponding amount of fuel.

I still thought it was an electrical problem, so that lead me to the air meter, and its connector. Sure enough, I wiggled it, things settled down and away I went. When I got home I cleaned it, greased it and plugged it back in.

Today's drive to work went off with no hitches. Let's see how long the fix lasts.

horsewidower If you go back to post 1132, you can see that there is no yellow power wire behind the yellow connector. So, the process should be to drop the column shroud and find that wire at the switch, and then trace it to wherever it is currently hanging out. Plug it back in at the back of fuse 10.

Then splice the cut wire at the connector and rewire it to the back of the dash.

Since I've taken off work, starting tomorrow, I'll get back to it then.

After that's done, I'll change the timing belt on the 164...I've given myself a week for that bit of work.

alfaloco Hey that's ok... there's many Alfisti on here who could guide you better than me. And that's the same way I feel about all the other BB'ers who have helped us with Mike's GTV 6. Couldn't have got it all done without them!

Correct-- the connector is ok as is. Conforms to the wiring diagram. Remember we are looking at the LOAD side of the fuses, not the power side!
The yellow lead from your combination switch enters the fuse box at the other end of fuse 10, the power side.

horsewidower I'm thinking the cut one goes to the dash lights. So what you are telling me is that the diagram shows that there are 3 slots with 4 wires...and the 4th slot is empty. See, I didn't know that, thought the yellow lead from the switch went in the 4th slot. The "scales" are falling from my eyes, never been taught how to read one of these things.

Where does the yellow lead from the switch land?

alfaloco Well, Bob it's got 3 of the 4 slots in the connector plug occupied, like the diagram shows. Question is, where's the other end of that cut yellow wire?

In your photo, we're looking at the slot with the double wire leads, so it either goes to the dash lights on your tach connector plug, OR it fed the G5 connector.

Plus, it's missing a wire. IF (big if) I'm reading the diagram correctly.

OK on the bottom cover-- that helps bundle up the wiring and keep one's shoes from kicking things loose.
