My Webers are old one (45CDOE9).
I have no problem concerning the brass floats as I have controled the fuel level frequently.
I was affraid to have a level too high. That is not the case : I have 26,5 mm on the right carburator (cylindre 1 & 2) and 26 mm on the left one (3 & 4).
Keith Franck specify 25 mm but I'm not sure this could be the reason of this problem.
Your assumtion regarding the accelerator pump circuit is a good idea.
I'll drive the car without the main tubes to be sure that only the idle circuit is operating and I'll check the plug color to have a better idea of the richness on this circuit.
I could also disconnect the Weber accelerator pump to see the result.
It looks strange to me that the plugs look poor and that the idle circuit could be too rich ...

Are your Webers new, or refurbished old? I ask, because I once bought a pair of Webers from a well-regarded seller in Europe, and it turned out that one of the brass floats has a small leak. As the float became filled with fuel, it gradually made two cylinders more and more flooded. It eventually ruined a pair of pistons and cylinders.
The only real symptom was that the idle adjustments kept changing. It made no sense.
Another thought might be that your distributor advance is sometimes stuck at full advance, causing a preignition at low revs. Your plug certainly does not appear too rich.
I have reread your description several times, and am wondering if your accelerator pump circuit is supplying too much fuel for a wide-open-throttle at low RPM?
