|nick11179||Hole worked! Thanks everyone. Had to jimmy the lock a bit but it popped open after a few tries.|

I'll second the idea of drilling the hole behind the license plate. My cable has broken twice - once at the inside release handle and once about half way in between the release and the lock. As Vin said, once you've got the license plate on, no one will ever know it's there. Just be sure to carry (INSIDE the car - not inside the trunk) whatever type of tool is needed to remove your license plate and a long, skinny screwdriver to stick inside the hole you've drilled in order to pop the latch.

I know you will get into the trunk one way or another.
The usual suppliers carry replacement cables once you do open it and replacing isnt too difficult.

Thats a bummer.
You could build this tool and go from underneath. Below the latch, on the underside of the car, you will see a hole. You fish around up there and unlatch the trunk.
I didnt have the tool and tried for hours unsuccessfully.
Then I took a drill and opened the trunk in 10 mins. Once you have drilled the hole, stick a screwdriver in and open the latch.
Here is a picture of the latch.
You cant see the hole once your license plate is on anyways.

|nick11179||Just tried it. It is definitely broken somewhere else than the latch. I pulled with a pair of vice grips and just got more and more cable coming out... any other ideas?|

Try gripping it as far rearward as you can reach, so the sheath can curve as you compress it against the lever. You will be moving both the outer sheath and inner cable, but that's OK - the latch should pop.

1982 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce Trunk Release Cable Broken away from the latch
Today when changing the battery out and closing the trunk, the release cable broke. I went to open it this AM and the latch has no resistance. Pulled off the panel and the cable is still attached so it's somewhere between the trunk and were I can't see... How do I go about opening the trunk now? I would like to do it without destroying too much... just had her painted.
