I gotta question.

Does anybody have any information about a 1972 LEGAL FIA 16-valve head for the 2.0L motor?

I would appreciate any sort of HISTORY or just engine facts. I think the head was called the ANGELLINI (confused about spelling) head. Apparently this head had a better valve angle to allow for Alfa RACE motors to hit about 300hp.

Any information would be appreciated

Thanks,
Richard

narrow valve angle head

I would not suggest trying this on any vintage groups that I know of but if you want more info Peter Nitoglia is the person to get ahold of - if you need his # contact me.
p.s. 300h.p. sounds a little optomistic unless you use the full F.I. setup something @250 is more like it with carbs but Peter can give you the full story. Fred Sch.

I will be fairly busy with other things next year, and won't be able to run the car competively any series, so this is more to have a fun car to run out on a friday test day somewhere. I am not planning on running it in a vintage group.

Richard

p.s.

Back in 1972 Angellini got 300hp consistantly out of that car using the Spica fuel injection. I am sure an M.S.D. and a well tuned electronic fuel injection will work for 300hp conisistantly at the friday test sessions

When I bought the car it wasn't 2.5 legal, so it won't matter too much will it?

Richard- I was merely passing on some info because Peter already has such an engine and is very close to the source. My other comments were made because to my knowledge that head was never accepted for use by the SCCA in its period PERIOD. It was tried -Bob Cozza tried to get the GTam accepted as a succesor to the aging GTAs but could not. As always I am happy to be informed otherwise. If there are other issues you would care to discuss in public about your car go ahead but they can also be directed to me personally if you like. Fred.

According to my Don Black, the engine was never used in the GTAm, only in the GTA for Group 5 racing, which is FIA and not SCCA.

Don recalls selling very few of these in the states (somewhere around 5), some to power boats for racing, at least one for a Formula B car, and probably one for a sports racer.

He told me to do my homework ;) and look in the CRH for the correct documents. Since I could not afford the below, I never did...

There was one up on e-bay about a year ago- a guy in Florida decided to go with a modern TS motor instead of finding all the parts to do the 16v engine- it was missing the crank, pistsons, rods and a few other items. If I recall right, they were asking $3500 for an opening bid.

Ecarrillo,

Thank you, i did get the pictures and letters about the #181 car. I really appreciate, it helps me understand more about how the car was built. Thank you very much for the information.

I can't believe that car had a collotti gear box in it and a dry sump. Too bad that that isn't still in the car.

Thanks again,

Richard

original spec of #181

Richard- that car did not have a colotti trans in it when David bought the car. The car had never been on a track when the previuos owner (who built the car) sold the car to David. Everything looked great and our initial plan was to retain the dry-sump setup but testing at willow (on one occasion involving Davids other car) showed that the set-up was not working (oil temps way too high) Alot of research showed the custom cast sump was simply too shallow not allowing the oil to be cast-off. At that point the decision was made to go back to a regular set-up. The braking system which again looked slick also had to be replaced and we could not add-on to the existing roll bar because the tubing used was way too thin so a whole new cage was also installed. re roll cage

Anthony that cage was done by Don Oldenberg he and his wife run DP racing in H.Bch. right around the corner from my old shop.Primarily a 510 guy (I never held that against him) he has been doing all my fabrication for almost 20yrs. Let me know if you want his #. Good luck with your new job! Fred.
