High mounted Stop lights

Applicable legislation
Land Transport Rule: Vehicle Lighting 2004
Mandatory and permitted equipment
1. A class MA vehicle first registered in New Zealand on or after 1 January 1990 must be fitted with one or two high-mounted stop lamps.
2. Any other vehicle may be fitted with one or two high-mounted stop lamps.

I read this as;
Any car first registered in NZ before 1990 doesn't have to have a high mounted stop light, but can if the owner wishes to install them.
As this rule applies only to vehicles previously registered in NZ (before 1990)so any imports must have them installed.

Does anyone have any comment on their experiences in NZ with this?

The two key words are:

Must... it is mandatory...

May... it is not mandatory...

The problem is that it also says "first registered in New Zealand on or after 1 January 1990" not any model of vehicle complied in New Zealand on or after 1 January 1990... your vehicle will be registered post this date.

...Unfortunately you're going to lose this one...

The one I'm restoring was first registered new in NZ December 1970 so I may be OK.

BUT Just in case, I suppose it's easier and neater to include the wiring now rather than later, but it means I'll have to dice and splice the newly wrapped loom though. Grrr.
