Northeast: Track days at the New York Safety Track

For anyone in the Northeast interested in getting track time this summer, here is a group I had a really positive experience with last summer..

Here's is a link to the club: NECC Motorsports!

They were founded around Corvairs more than 30 years ago, but they accept all makes and models. I paid $299 for the day, and logged 2hrs:45min of track time. As a complete rookie, they took really good care of me.

This summer they have two track days at the New York Safety Track (NYST) in Harpersfield, NY - about 1hr:15mins west of Albany.
- Saturday June 25, 2016.
- Saturday August 27, 2016.

Here is a link to the track: NYST | New York Safety Track
The NYST hosts a lot of motorcycle activity, but also has dedicated auto track days. The track is 2.1miles long, 18 turns, 450ft elev change. They have other membership options besides signing up with a Club.

NYST teaser video -

Last year I was the only Alfa there among 23 other cars: Corvairs, AMG, Lotus, Porsche, MG, Maserati and a rental Toyota Yaris.

Cheers,
- Art

Next year? I've done years of AutoX and want to try a track day. I'm still tuning and working out bugs this year though. Next year I should be in a good place to make one of these.

Yes, I think they'll rent the track again next year.
Sounds like you've had some fun..

The attraction to this group for me is the location, there is nothing closer and it's a GREAT track. Only a few years old and lots to learn with 18 turns.

September 24th is two weekends from now. Nice and cool combustion air. The day price got reduced to $249 because we'll take turns on the track with a motorcycle club. We had the same arrangement in June and it worked nicely. We got a 15 minute session each hour. I got 6 sessions total.

Cheers,
- Art

PS - You may know about the new road course closer to you in Palmer, MA. See what days you can find there. I've only heard from others, that it has exposed rock and concrete barriers near the track, so off-track excursions can be very ...permanent.

Yeah. My friend goes to days at Palmer and also Watkins. If I recall they were a bit more pricey so this place is interesting. The track looks great. Thanks for the info. My 1750 handles amazingly and the engine is close. I'm just tweaking the jetting to get the best from the motor.

Well, we had a spectacular day at NYST!

... 34 cars of all types. Great guys and gals. I got two instructor sessions myself and in turn I tutored two new drivers. Our GTV6 has new poly bushings, I dialed in the tire pressure, focussed on an improved line, plus braking late and hard. Dropped my lap time in a huge way! I couldn't be happier.

The GTV6 got a lot of compliments. Everyone loved the sound of it ripping through the gears at redline, and they loved the fact that it hadn't been tricked out, I drive it in nearly stock condition, people said they were amazed at how hard I drove such a flawless classic car, and how fast it went...

The track crew send the cars out at intervals so we don't see much of other cars, but I outbraked a Factory Five AC Cobra into turn 1, I think he got self conscious and pushed too hard and spun out in front of me.

I'll post again the next time the NECC Motorsports guys host an event.. They are considering Pocono next summer, but I'm told that track has many different configurations and the suitability to an GTV6 will depend on which configuration they choose.

Yes, the club officers talked about about costs. I have no idea what the NYST costs for a day, but they came out ahead with 34 cars x $250 = $8,500 plus the Motorcycle Club. They are priced out of Lime Rock and Monticello. They said they'd look into Palmer but not fond of the rocks and concrete so near the cars.

Watkins I've spectated. Love to try it some time. Looks like I'd want a GT car for the straights and long curves, not the GTV6.

Ciao,

Here is a video of one 15minute session from the NECC Motorsports track day at NYST. It was a blast. My comments are geared towards drivers who want to get to know the track a little. There is no engine audio, sorry.

NECC Motorsports just announced their first two 2017 track days: (see website, lots of info and teaser videos above).

Friday, June 23 - at NYST Harpersfield, NY

Sunday, August 6th - at Pocono International. Not sure which course they'll run.

Have to drive their the day before the event, since it starts at 7:00AM.
Looks cool.
Can I run my straight pipe their or is a muffler required?

Hey, it would be awesome to have another Alfa for company. I don't recall it from the tech inspection, but I emailed the club and asked.

Most drivers do what you are planning, stay at the local hotel with the added bonus of getting your tech inspection done in the parking lot that night.

I'm an hour 15 minutes away, I tend to leave here around 6am and get tech inspected at the track. Driver's safety and orientation meeting, then hit the track around 8am.

If it's of help, there's an empty couch at my house you can crash on here in Niskayuna, NY the night before - I'm more or less on your way there.

Ciao!

PS - If you watch the video above, around the 1:10-1:40 mark you can hear what people are running for pipes - it's pretty loud.

Haven't heard back from the Club about straight pipes, but I'm quite sure you can based on the cars in the YouTube clip.

I'll update once I hear for sure.

Sorry for the tardy response - I finally found the club's reply in an email account I don't use regularly:

"Art, the track rules say: Sound levels will be monitored. Vehicles found to be over the limit will be asked to correct on the first offense, then not permitted to participate on subsequent offenses."

The club recommends either just running with muffler, or have the option on hand to do so.

Cheers,
