I don't think they could afford to, even with sponsors.

"The 2018 F1 car will bear the Alfa Romeo logo, and will be equipped with the 2018 Ferrari power units."

This makes the car an Alfa Romeo how? Seems not much different than the Alfa Romeo stickers they put on Ferraris now.

I think it's "Marketing 101" to promote the Alfa Romeo brand - especially in the U.S. and not a bad thing if Sauber receives additional development funds from FCA

Honestly, I don't get this. Why on earth would FIAT support teams that compete with each other? I also don't get why a race team would buy engines from their competitor. DUMB!

So the new Giulia Quadrifoglio has a engine designed by who? Alfa is no more a Fiat than it is a Ferrari. Chevy and Honda put their logo on Indy cars which doesn't make them either one.
Old farts will complain that the Alfa F1 car will not be made with a stick shift.

It appears that the Alfa Romeo engineers will work with Sauber too. So not just marketing. It's a nice development. At least another F1 car to root for.

At least it makes more sense than the Renault that will be badged an Aston Martin in the Red Bull next year. They aren't even related.

its somehow different if team name consist Alfa Romeo than just small sticker on Ferrari. Hope they will get better car next year they could get some points aswell, If Im correct Sauber now uses year old Ferrari engines and next year they will get latest version of Alfa branded Ferrari engine, there might also be some Alfa/Ferrari engineering to team.

here is press release of Alfa

The Haas F1 car is also a Ferrari in most important aspects.

"While the Haas shares almost all of its mechanical components with the Ferrari, the American branded Italian built car does not use the same sidepod concept seen on the red cars"

Haas VF-17 - Racecar Engineering

F1 is inching closer to a spec series like Indycar.

Fiat Chrysler isn't the first. It's common knowledge that the The Red Bull and Toro Rosso F1 teams are both owned by the Red Bull energy drink conglomerate. I suggest the Ferrari & Alfa Romeo-Sauber teams would, in a broad sense, have the same sort of primary - secondary relationship.
