There are many fake videos on the internet of the accident, but this looks like the real thing, from his helmet cam. Frightening, and sobering. The accident broke his helmet, and they said if he hadn't been wearing it he surely would have died. Accident is at 52 seconds on the video. Scary.

I am skeptical that video was taken by Schumacher. Two reasons:

- News reports at the time of his accident said he was skiing "off piste" (*); that is, not on groomed slopes. Yet that guy is zipping past other skiers and seems to be on a regular run.

- Schumacher's family has been pretty guarded about giving out information. It would inconsistent for them to put his GoPro footage on YouTube.

*) Here's how Wikipedia defines "off piste": off-piste skiing is skiing in the backcountry on ungroomed and unmarked slopes or pistes, including skiing in unmarked or unpatrolled areas either inside or outside of a ski resort's boundaries, sometimes in the woods. Unlike groomed cross-country and alpine skiing, the land and the snow pack are not monitored, patrolled, or maintained.

So maybe someone just threw the helmet cam to make it look like a bad crash

Has there been any updated news? Last I heard was that they were going to try to slowly bring him out of the coma.

Yes, this seems to be correct. I was told in a conversation today that one reason for taking somebody slowly out of a prolonged coma is that those patients usually are addicted to the medication (opiates) that were used to sedate them and doctors need to minimize the patient's withdrawal symptoms.

Another reason, I read a couple of weeks ago when the news first broke about the attempt was that they wanted to do testing as the medication is withdrawn to see if the brain was able to recognize and follow simple commands like "Move your first finger on your right hand." If the patient was unable to respond to the command or by blinking their eyes that they understood the command, it could be assumed that the swelling in the brain had not subsided enough to allow the necessary healing and at that point they could re-sedate Schmacher without having brought him all the way out of the induced coma to allow further healing before they tried again.

It was also stated that there would be no further updates. I took that to mean that they would let us know if the process was successful, if he died, etc.; but, that there would be no intermediate, daily, etc. updates.

Thank you. I had not heard anything. Patience and prayers then.
