Question Alternator / Rough Start Issues

I have a strange issue going on. They may be the same or separate.

First, the alternator gauge will be right of center, at center or to left of center. At times it will wobble, between center and either left of center or right or both (from left of center to right of center.

When running, if I turn on the headlights, the alternator gauge will drop to left of center and stay there.
And when I turn the headlights off, the gauge will go back to either center or right of center.

When she is cold, she starts really hard. The starter is working to turn her over, but it takes a while. If the engine is hot, she fires right up.

I have put in a new Interstate battery and replaced the alternator.

Still, the issues persist.

Any thoughts?

Thank you in advance.

Cheers,

Mike

Could you put a voltmeter on your battery, with the car running, something above idle, turn the headlights on, heater fan, stuff like that and let us know what the voltage does? Before, during, after.

I difficult cold starting could be something different, unless the cranking speed is really slow.

Is you engine to chassis ground strap in good condition?

the alt gauge should sit steady at 13V, not less, with car running.
and confirm if the battery light comes on with KO (key on), and goes out as soon as the car starts.
check your battery ground strap bolted to the trunk floor. Best to unbolt it completely, clean surface, replace.

yes, let us know volts checks mentioned by vintagem.

cold starting will be to do with the L-jetronic system.

It'd be best to open that topic in the spider thread....you'll get a lot more people viewing.
