Need help identifying GTV model

Hi all,

This is my first post here. Iím looking to learn more about Alfa Romeo as I have recent got the bugs yet my knowledge is limited at best. A local shop is selling a GTV along with restoration, and Iím thinking about pulling the trigger. Iíve done some internet research and am now stuck with a question that Iím hopeful your collective experience here can help me.

According to the shop, the car is listed as GTV 2000. However, itís dashboard doesnít look like a 2000 but rather a 1750 as per my internet browsing. Itís official registration paper states that the car is registered in 1974. Its body number is AR-786301, and its engine number is AR-0051264335. The car is registered in Bangkok, Thailand where Iím from.

Is there a way of telling what this car model originally is from those two numbers? I couldnít find itís VIN. Any advice or suggestions would be more than grateful.

Thanks,
Yuth

Fusi PDFs, here, https://www.alfabb.com/bb/forums/alf...al-1910-a.html, show VIN ranges, but goes only through 1972. That number is closer to a Giulia sedan than any GT listed. You have a pic of the VIN? Where is the "body number" stamped?
The engine is a non-US 2000, sounds about right for 1973 or 74. But engines are easy to move, as are dashboards. Hard to say what you're looking at without more info and pics. If you can't post yet send me a private mail and we can discuss posting them for you.

I hadn't thought re RHD car, so perhaps SA-built with its own VIN?

That does not appear to be a complete chassis number. And, it's not close to anything for a GTV 2000. Those Chassis numbers start with 24 or 30 depending on the market. Ask for a picture of the chassis number.

Like I said, if it's an SA car it can be anything. I have pics of SA VINs from last year, nothing like Milan's at all.

I see a 2000 console with a 1750 dash. Most things look as 2000. Steering wheel, seats. Yes need close up of of the tag(s) and the serial number stamping on fire wall

Also wonder if there is a stamping in forward trunk (boot) rain gutter under rubber.
It looks to be a 2000 except dash and serial number quoted.

Ken,

Follow the link to the site where the car is being sold. There are more pictures, there. Those seats aren't Alfa seats.

I see what you mean but I wonder if they are modified GTV seats

No rocker/sill seams always makes me nervous ... Only takes 15 minutes with a 6' grinder to make those vertical seams in bog if the repairer had any sort of pride, even if just bogging and flicking on to the for sale market

As with all types of racing and performance upgrades, it's possible that the 'non' FIA racing rules in some countries in the 90's and onward would favour you if your car looked and presented as a 2L. In Australia mainly 1750 GTVs were converted to look like 2L cars for the national track races. At club level people also converted smooth nose 1300 GTJ to 2L to run their cars in local club competitions, (also mentioned by Pete (PSK) in another post so were 1600 GTJ smooth nose cars). So it's possible the car was created out of another model and is not a 2L. The car's rear windscreen parcel shelf (and rear seat base) differed in depth between the models. Here is part list: 1300 GTJ step nose,1600 GT, 1600 GTV step nose and 1750 S1 all had deep parcels shelves maximum depth is 52cm (from centre at the base of rear windscreen towards the rear seat headrest). The 1300 GTJ smooth nose, 1750 S2 and 2L had shallower parcels shelves so less than 52 cm. This measurement will just narrows it down to one of the two groups.
The 1300 GTJ and 1600GTJ smooth nose cars are relatively rare today (given many surrendered their existence for various reasons as mentioned in another post) compared to the 1750 and 2L GTV and thus can command a premium over an equivalent condition 1750 of 2L, but you would need an original 1300 or 1600 engine for the car along with all the other missing bits, if that is what you want to do.
Worst case scenario is the stamp/code in the boot channel indicates a body number different to what you see on the car.

One more pic from Yuth of the VIN. Poor contrast in the photo, but looks to be a normal Alfa stamping.
