matching number

Hello

I have a two question

1. regarding matching numbers:

My cylinder head number and engine number are different.
Is it mandatory for matching number that both numbers are identical?

My chassis nr. AR 377958, production 10/1963
engine nr. AR 00112*12729

nummer hammered in in the cylinder head: 18328
************************************************** ********

2. what is the tolerance in diameter of a valve rod between the upper and lower part.
is a difference of 7/100 mm ( 0,07 mm) acceptable ?

Thanks
Alfred

best regards Alfred (Germany)

The number pictured is an inspectors mark and has nothing to do with correct fitment of head to block. It indicates a series of gauging and machining processes were completed.

Heads don't have serial numbers. Some have part numbers cast in the front and as Gordon says, there can be manufacturing marks. But there aren't any numbered heads.

I always thought matching numbers meant that their was a number on the chassis that also matched the engine. Is that true? My 1960 Giulietta Spider has a replacement 1.3L but came with the original engine and head. I am planning to rebuild it and put it back in at some point but if I am wrong on what matching is I am just going to start telling everyone it is matching numbers and skip the rebuild

No. it is not true with Alfa's. Engine numbers do not match chassis numbers, and body panel assembly numbers do not match chassis or engine numbers. Same with transmissions and rear axle numbers. Most of these are either assembly numbers or variant numbers for specific applications.
Engine numbers do have a chronological build period, and prefix numbers may indicate model application.
This is a condensed version answer.
