Transmission whine
 
Hi All, I have a 1979 spider that needed new front and rear seals on the transmission which, of course, also required a new clutch. After my mechanic did the repairs there was a serious whining, almost a rubbing/chafing sound coming from the transmission tunnel. It definitely did not make this sound when I took my car in to be repaired. I sent the car back to him where the transmission was again removed and the throwout bearing was checked. On putting the car back together I still get that whining sound. I feel I have have gone beyond the capabilities of my mechanic (not a specialist in Alfa's) and I am worried about driving the car.
Any ideas what it could be and should I not drive until I get a specialist to look at it?

There are two rubber boots on the transmission tower (maybe three if your car has the big outer one that sits under the metal surround for the transmission tower hole...dunno how the '79 is set up.) Even with a perfectly working transmission, if they're torn or not installed properly you'll get a noise in the car that will convince you your transmission is on its last legs. I'd check that those were all installed properly first.

Thanks Gubi. I can check them myself by crawling under the car or should I get it on a hoist? As you can tell, I am not a mechanic.

You need to check them from above, I'm afraid. It's a real PITA to get to them on the later cars, might be a little easier on a '79? I'd see what folks here say.

I've done the job on my '63 and '74 which aren't too bad. The '91 would be a %&*$, and I suspect yours is somewhere in the middle.

Well, it looks like the gearbox will be coming out again. Anyone know of a good Alfa mechanic in the Hamilton Burlington area of Ontario? I know of Pinarello Mortori in Toronto, but they are difficult to get to (more so for my wife who would have to pick me up once I dropped off the car).

Wait, why does the transmission have to come out? The rubber seals are installed after the transmission is in the car and need to be checked as such. You get to them by some amount of dismantling the interior trim (exact amount of dismantling required on a '79 Spider I do not know.)

Thanks for this. As I mentioned earlier, I am no mechanic (oil changes, changing light bulbs, changing flats, basic screw turning is as far as I usually go.) I will still go to a knowledgeable mechanic.

Here's a few photos I stole. There is a smaller inner boot that seals the shaft to the top of the tower (this keeps oil from leaking out of the tower down the transmission.) Then there is a second, bigger boot that seals between the shaft and the black metal ring on the body.

On some cars these are separate boots, on others it's a single piece that combines the two.

If these are missing or torn you will get a TON of transmission noise in the cabin even with a good transmission. They are generally installed after the transmission is in the car.

My mechanic commented on installing all the boots and seals, but let's hope he didn't get them on correctly, otherwise there are bigger problems.

BTW anyone else have to login twice, once when first accessing the BB and a second time when wanting to post? Not a big deal, but curious.

The good news, Gubi was correct.
I took my spider to Pinarello Motori and the conclusion, based on a test drive, was the boots were installed incorrectly and the awful sounds I was hearing were normal.
As expected, there were some other issues, such as the idle was too high (I knew that but didn't want anyone except an Alfa expert to fiddle with the spica) and he said it felt like an engine or transmission mount was deteriorating.
They will do a full inspection but I don't think much else is wrong, but the peace of mind is always nice.

Funny thing. I've had my 67 Duetto since new. Every time I took it to an Alfa dealer or Alfa specialist, I'd be told that the engine mounts need to be replaced.......

Hi Kim,

Please let me know if replacing the rubber gaitors fixed your noise issues?

I have a similar sound and want to get a sense on the level of noice reduction.

Will do. Unfortunately, I got it into the shop too late to avoid the spring rush, so it is in wait mode. Given the weather here, that may not be a bad thing (rain and cold).
