Rear axle oil seal groove

What alternatives to speediseal have you used? My axle has a groove from the oil seal ; normally a speedisleeve be fine. However, on the rear axle, the rear axle bearing is aft (outside) of the oil seal sealing surface. Which means, the bearing and retainer ring would have to go on first, then the speedisleeve. I don’t think the bearing and retainer will pass over the sleeve...

So ok for the first time. What happens when the bearing needs to be replaced after the speedisleeve is installed? Tear it off, machine off the adhesive used, and redo??

Alternative is weld up and machine the axle back to 34mm?

Thoughts? Thanks!

I don't remember exactly what the bore is like that holds the rear axle seal, been a while since I've done one. In other seal applications, I have heard of using shim to space the seal out so the lip runs not in the groove.

Cheers,

I would use the Seedisleeve and forget about getting it off until you face that issue. A used axle should not be hard to find.

I agree, but use a new bearing.

oh yeah, new bearings for sure. Heres the draft plan
Get 34mm speedisleeve and a tube of ultra grey
assemble new bearing onto axle
assemble bearing retainer onto axle -- using 1 1/2 inch ID iron pipe driver
machine up a tight fit collar for speedisleeve and use that to drive it down into position, with ultra gray adhesive

Sound reasonable? Since the gap between axle OD and speedi ID is pretty small, flexible adhesive like ultragray should be fine (theres only radial slip load and its tiny I expect)

seem OK?

locktit 574 instead of ultra grey

Okay, I'm in the same boat on this. Goats, what did you end up doing, and did it work?

Is 34mm the correct sleeve size, and where'd you get one?

99134 speedisleeve IIRC. Amazon. I used ultra grey since I had it handy. Remember to change the bearing before u install the sleeve. So far so good for me.

Ps measure your axle diameter to confirm size!!!

I've Used Double-Lipped Seals In Other Applications With Success (the lips are offset and ride on an ungrooved surface). I Have Not Looked For This Type Of Seal For The Axle But I Bet They Are Out There.

Too late: I ordered it and will blame you if it doesn't fit :D

Seriously, thanks for the tip, appreciate it.

Gubi 05-11-2019 03:55 PM

99134 fit perfectly. 1-1/4" steel pipe is pretty much the exact size needed to drive it on.

goats 05-11-2019 04:21 PM

11/2 inch pipe. 1.25 is only 32mm

Gubi 05-11-2019 05:14 PM

No, 1-1/4" steel pipe, I just rechecked the label. It has an ID of 35.3mm for some reason. So it's 1.39"

Welcome to America, where the measurement units suck, the standards make no sense, and we have an idiot for president.
