Transmission Compatibility 72 GTV 69 Spider

Hi Folks

Is a 5 speed Manual transmission from a 72 GTV a straight forward swap with a 69 Spider 5 speed ?

I have a 66 Duetto with transmission internal parts from a 74 GTV, and a 86 Spider. They are interchangeable over decades, with just a few small differences. The reverse switch is in the bell housing in the early ones, and on the tx on the later ones.

The shift rods go through the bell housing on the early ones - to actuate the reverse switch.

The reverse lock-out changed around 1970 from a push-down-on-theshift-lever.

But almost any one can be used with only small considerations.

It should be a straight swap. Any 105/115 trans from 69 to 93 will fit and work.

Are you using a 72 bellhouse? The 69 bellhouse has a cut out for the above mentioned long rods and if used wirh a short rod trans there may be a leak issue. You will also likely need wire extensions for the reversing light switch. There is also the need to maybe change the speedo drive gear. These are side issues. 1,2,3,4,5 &R all the same .

All 69 to 74 trans have the long rods and the cut out in the bellhousing for them. They also have the reverse switch that is held on by 2 screws. The 75 to 93 have the shorter rods no cutout and a screw in reverse switch.

You can put any trans from 1969 to 1993 in your Alfa without having to change the bellhousing. Only the 1982 to 1989 do you have to change the bellhousing because of the flywheel sensors for the Bosch Jetronic.

If your trans is complete I would just install it. The only thing I would check before putting it in would be the reverse light switch. You can check it with a multi meter.

Those two statements are contradictory.

I agree with the first statement. Yes, 69 to 74 trans have the long rods and 75 to 93 have the shorter rods.

However, if you put a late transmission on an early bellhousing, the front holes for those short rods are going to leak oil through the "D" shaped cut-out in the bellhousing. kengta talked about this in post #4. You either need to seal up the "D" shaped cut-out, or use a late bellhousing that doesn't have the cut-out.

None of this impacts QuinnLing since he has both a pre '75 transmission and bellhousing.

Why change the bellhousing? Any of the bellhousings will work on a 69 to 81 and 90 to 93. Only the 82 to 89 needs the specific bellhousing with the holes for the flywheel sensors.

Im just evaluating option for my transmission issue. I can get a spare transmission for $350, But I think my issue is a stuck clutch/pressure plate. The car sat for year in my garage. I'm going to try to free it this weekend.

First time I experience a stuck clutch/pressure plate. I had a few friends push the car while in gear and the clutch pedal pressed to free it loose. Simple !

Here's the difference. It's a good idea to swap the bellhousing and put a new oil seal in there while your at it. The short rod trannys do not have square section "o-rings" in the transmission body to prohibit the trans oil from leaking out as the long rod boxes.
