Long Rod Transmissions
 
Some 105 / 115 Transmissions have a long set of shifter rods. Some have a shorter version.

Switches
 
FYI- the switchs on the shifter tower are neutral switch, not reverse. Another agraviting safety idea while Chrysler was loading it with "options" and USA safety compliance bits. Along with lots of weight and options.

I believe the long rod TX's ended with the hydraulic clutch. Other than relocating the wiring for the reverse light, you can use either TX in most any Alfa. The later TX's also deleted the push-down-for-reverse shift lever (with screw-on knob)in favor of a side-push spring gate (with push-on knob).

Lots of folks fail to replace the square o-rings for the shift levers, and the TX slowly leaks TX lube ( mostly vapor) into the clutch housing. The short rod TX solved this issue, likely why it was introduced.

strange my 72 the shifter housing only worked in reverse. after driving the spider for over 10 years or more one day I poped it in reverse with out the seat belt on while working under the dash and the buzzer scared the you know what out of me.
I did not even know it had one. and latter when my switch busted in the bell I wired the back up light to the top untill I could replace the switch. I do seem to remember it would flash when going into 5th some times. or maybe on in 5th it was a long time ago but I swapped it back as soon as I had a new switch and a clutch to do.

The cutover to the short rods was 1975. Very rare in Australia. First time I saw one in a Berlina I was wrecking, I kept it for myself as I realised that it would eliminate the weeping from the selector shafts.

A rare case for Alfa, but the seal grooves in the cases are not machined concentrically in the case. Even when you replace the o-rings, you can see that the seals do not sit quite right in the bores and therefore will leak quite soon.
