I don't know how old the filters are, nor do I know how they were stored prior to my purchase of the car. From what I've seen online, the rust deal isn't too uncommon...

I'm less worried about the rust than I am about the anti-drainback valve. It seals against the cardboard endcap, and they are notorious for leaking and causing poor startup lubrication. We had at least one guy on here who had a startup rattle caused by that, and if you search online you'll find many more.

Junk them and buy something better.

Yes. The anti drainback valve on the premium fram isn't even nitryl. If it were, it would be an orange color.

The bypass on that filter is a flexible piece of tin rather than a real spring.
