Question about my compression numbers

New Spider to me. 1988 Veloce. 55,00 miles. I know very little of its history but PO had headers installed that were changed out for smog test. They have been re-installed. It also came with Koni yellows and appears to have stiffer/lower springs.

This is my 5th Alfa, and I've never had one that had this much torque. My first was a new '74 Spider, so my memory has faded, but I don't think it made power like this one!

Without doing a teardown, I am wondering if there was engine work done. I ran a warm dry compression test today (3 passes) and got a consistent 200 lbs. even in all four cylinders.

Does that seem like a normal number? Seems high to me, which is a GOOD thing!!!

That`s higher than a typical 10 to 1 motor. But remember with the intake cam retarded as it is, overlap is severely reduced and the exhaust cam is a faster ramp design than earlier versions again reducing overlap compression losses.

Measure from the top of the #1 spark plug hole to the piston top at TDC and ask another Series 4 Motronic engine owner to do the same and compare.

You probably have a well sealed engine. That`s good!
