motronic relay relationships

hi, does anybody know if the motronic ecu used in the alfa 75 TS 'knows' if a relay that it drives is down?
I have just had to check the connections for my variator solenoid relay as the variator was getting no voltage, it turns out that the wiring was fine, but the ecu pin 31 connection to the relay base was not grounding itself as it should at around 1200rpm to actuate the relay. I fitted a new relay and actuated it manually by earthing the relevant pin, which worked the variator fine and after a couple of cycles of doing that, the ecu started to work the relay again and has been working fine ever since.
Just wondered if it would have sensed a duff relay and 'switched off' the variator function?
