1991 S4 - Left Tail lights

I have a very strange problem or problems with my 91 S4.

Lights off left and right blinker work fine.
Lights on left blinker works and right blinker does not work
Lights on left tail lights do not work and right tail lights work

All brand new bulbs.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you in advance.

Did you check fuses?

I'd start by checking and cleaning grounds. Your right front headlight/sidelight grounds likely have a problem.

Sounds like fuses but since you checked that, I wonder what it could be.

Please keep us posted.

Thanks

I cleaned the grounds on left rear quarter panel, the ground on battery, grounds on both headlamps, cleaned and tightened grounds on tail light assemblies and grounds on passenger rear side of the engine block.

Also replaced 3 of the sockets on the tail lights. They were a little corroded. This is a New Mexico car and the ground locations were not bad at all.

Last of all I replaced the flasher relay.

Now left hand blinkers with lights on do blink but barely. Would never pass inspection. Also lights on the left side are very bright compared to the right side. When the blinker on the left is on it blinks super fast compared to the right side.

Not sure what else to do other than check the fuses again since I did all of this work.

there are 2 grounds left and right of the radiator on the upper beam, each with 3 or 4 ground wires....which are for side lights and also for the front blinkers.
Since front blinker grounds might also affect the rears, it'd be worth removing and thoroughly cleaning both of these.

photo shows the one on left near the screen filler.

And the rear light plug? you have checked voltage coming from that?

Thanks Spiderseries4.

I cleaned those grounds.

I wonder if I reversed the splices on the new sockets it would matter?

Will check the voltage and fuses again.

Thanks again for your response.

cannot say, but I would try swopping the light units around, just plug them in, swopped over, obviously removed and laying in the trunk (I think this is possible, same plugs I believe), then see if the fault follows the light unit or not.

If it does, then fault lies in unit, if not then it must be the wiring.

Switched the lamp assemblies and the issue went to the other side.

I reversed the wires on the socket of the lower outside tail lamp assembly and everything worked!!

Got it!

Thanks everyone for your input.
