Pressurize a cylinder that is at TDC, compression and listen for air leakage in the dipstick tube with a stethoscope to identify ring leakage. Listen in the tail pipe for exhaust valve leakage and in the airbox for intake valve leakage. Valve seal leakage is harder to identify but it is less of a concern.

Oh yes. The smoke black or gray on occasion was the engine being very tired. I went to an AutoX and it layed down trails of smoke which got worse and worse. The engine had been resurected from an unknown condition and clearly needed a rebuild.

I set about that in this thread:

When I tore down the head I could wiggle the valves in their guides. They were really worn.

It doesn't smoke anymore and makes more power than ever
