door seal installation

As I am replacing all of the rubber on the doors and side windows of my 69 GTV, I have been trying to figure out a way to make it easier to insert the various rubber pieces into the appropriate slots and holders. Last week during a club meeting at a specialty car shop, I remembered the ease with which we were able to stretch various rubber pieces over items in chemistry lab using glycerin. I found a local small drug store that had a small bottle of glycerin for $4, so I decided to give it a try. Wonderful. The large door seal that goes all around the door opening was very easy to replace. Glycerin is often an ingredient in hand lotions and soaps. It does not leach out some of the important plasticizers/solvents/softeners/etc in your rubber pieces as silicone does. It is touted by the specialty shops as a softener for the hardened rubber parts. I think that the actual rejuvenation would be minimal, but it should help maintain current pliability. Give it a try.
