How about a New Year's Drive

Use some of Jan Voboril's old routes. Start at PCH and Topanga, picnic in one of the cool mountain parks.

Chris / tire,
Get a date and a general route by this Sat morning and I'll pass the info at the AROSC Holiday Party that afternoon.
Spontaneous events require planning.

General route would be through the old Topanga rd to Mulholland past the Rockstore via the snake to the pch. We can have coffee at the Malibu commons and then head back via Las Flores. Just throwing that out there as it seems to be a pretty common route. An alternative return route would be via Malibu canyon to 101...

Paul, you and I actually met back in April at one of the Super Sundays. I had my 79 Spider ext to my friend's Pantera.

Wow, so the above route was not exciting? Ok, here's the one I ran with Eurotopia recently. Keep in mind that mine was the oldest car there driving with mostly 997s, E60 M5, E46 M3, even an R8 and springkling of AMG Benzes. By the time I made it down to the bottom of Tuna Canyon Rd, my brake fluid was cooking... So here it is:
1) topanga Canyon blvd to Mulholland Dr right
2) to mulholland hwy left
3)to Stunt rd. left
4)to Backbone Trail/Saddle peak Rd left
5)to Tuna Canyon Rd right
6)to PCH right
7)to Las Flores Canyon right
8)to Rambla Pacifico St. right
9)continue onto Piuma Rd
10) to Las Virgenes Rd right
11) to Muhlooand Hwy left
12) to Kanan Rd right
Onto 101 Freeway

So there you have 2 routes, one humane and other pretty torturous. Tuna Canyon turns into a one lane road, bordered by cliff on one side and mountain side on another and a whole bunch of sharp twisties in-between with room for nothing else. Personally, I would not recommend going through Tuna unless you are certain of your car and not afraid to put it through its paces. I ran a Berlina on 185/70/14 tires with tired Spica shocks and stock springs. Suspension is of unknown vintage so cannot say that was a very smart move on my part but sure as heck was fun.

Now is a good time to go through the canyons - the weather is cool to keep engine temps down and no rain to wash the debris across the road. Need to be wary of bicyclists.
