Targa California

Hey guys--it seems like we should have some Alfa presence at the first annual Targa California:

Home

This is the successor of the now defunct No Frills Iron Bottom Tour.

3 day tour in late March. Only requirement is a 1975 or earlier car. No registration fee. Just register, make your hotel reservations, and show up.

Not sure if I can go myself. At present I don't have a road-registered 75 or older car.

Well, now that I've posted this I've been told that this is a bit of a wild gang in terms of overdoing it on public roads and attracting undue attention from local gendarmes. Make your own judgment.

the main purpose is to have a nice day of driving with friends with out undue attention to our cars, as we are the ones to appreciate them. Not the general public. Call it driving under SR-71 cloak. We go have fun, but do NOT get the public aware that we are even there...can you dig it ???

I've been on driving events organized by the person behind the Targa Californa. In no way to they encourage crazy driving. It's about enjoying the cars the way they were meant to be. Of course in there is always someone out there that tends to do something stupid, but that happens at just about any kind of organized event.

Our 65' Mustang gives up some in cornering and braking but I'm sure it will make it up with a good case of road burn. If only the 911 brakes would bolt on. See you there.

So where are all the Alfas? Just spent the day chasing a gaggle of P cars. I am the only Italian car!

Sorry to hear that. Well was it a well-run/controlled event?

Targa California was a blast. Contrary to some earlier speculation about a "wild gang overdoing it" it was a great group of cars extracting exactly what each car was capable of. The diverse group did have too many P cars and not enough Alfas, but we had a Mercedes 300 SL, a Pontiac Grand Ville convertible, Plymouth Barracuda, a Chevy LT6 powered Nomad with a '53 Vette style. A Sunbeam Alpine, two Mustangs, a Volvo, a 280Z, a 510 with a SR22, a Datsun Roadster as well as many others.

We all drove exactly the way we wanted. Some did drive as fast as conditions allowed while others took a more leisurely pace. The roads were awesome and the weather could not have been more perfect.

The CHP did walk through the hotel parking lot before we took off asking which way we were headed. I don't know if anyone coughed up the information, but I am only aware of two violations. One was for 75 in a 55 and the other was a failure to stop behind the limit line. Not bad.

I encourage anyone who was considering participating to be there next year. I know I will be there.
