Question Mechanic in Austin?

Hello friends --

Joe Foster was my go-to mechanic for many years. Since he has now retired, I find myself in need of help.

I have an '84 Spider. After an overheating incident, the radiator was replaced. Soon after, she overheated again and the radiator cap was found to be faulty and replaced. Since then, she won't idle or run smoothly at low RPM until warming up and then, after warming up, goes straight to overheating.

Fairly sure I need to replace the head gasket.

This is well beyond my skill- or even tool- set, so I would welcome any suggestions for Austin area help.

thanks,
-bill

Unless you are losing coolant, the symptoms you describe point to a stuck/faulty thermostat. Your car uses a generic drop-in thermostat which is both cheap and easy to install. Try a new thermostat and see if your problem goes away.

Saw Joe today at CNC. He is still working and only semi-retired from other's shops. Has a backlog of cars to work on and a nice facility. B
