Looks like the seasonal ice road across the Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories, Canada. There was a show on the History Channel a while back on the perils of driving the Ice Road to Yellowknife each winter. By going straight across the ice you can cut off like 800 miles of driving to get supplies up there. There's a company who creats approaches to the ice, maintains the ice road by smoothing out the heaves and bumps, and invariably pulls the unlucky trucker out of the drink. I think they do most of the driving of the supply trucks too. No thanks

I remember an old story about the ice road. One of the things they did was punch holes into the ice and stick disgarded Christmas Trees in the holes to mark the area of the road.
