Bosch Electronic ignition timing way off

I've installed a new (Centerline) distributor. Generally on a 4 cylinder engine, when the timing is near optimum the engine speeds up. However, this occurs near the maximum advance mark "M" on the pulley. When I retired the timing to the "P" mark (or "F") mark the engine slows down. Blipping the throttle the engine is sluggish, reving up slowly. It revs up quickly at the "M" mark.

Distributor is inserted properly (it can only go in one way)
Rotor is pointing to the number 1 cylinder. (I verified that the number 1 was on TDC - "P" mark, by removing the spark plugs and noting the valves were closed and the piston was at the top.)

I'm at a loss...any ideas?

The P mark is always at TDC #1 cylinder but the M mark varies between engines so you must use the year and model to find were that mark is. You only need to use the P mark if you have a variable timing light. For a 2L engine you want the advance to be 36 - 38 degrees BTDC at 4000 rpm.

As per the instructions, you need to time the distributor to 36 degrees maximum advance using a timing light with built in advance, instead of relying on the stock timing marks on the pulley. If you have it set at 36 degrees and still want quicker response, you can add a little more advance as long as you are careful to watch (listen) for detonation.

I think you will find at those settings it revs nicely and works quite well. If you have any other questions give us a call and we can walk you through adjusting the distributor.
