Valve Stem Removal

I am getting some wheels ready for refinishing and I can't get what appears to be the metal valve stems off.

I can get a socket around one side and it turns. The other side has a notch but not much, if anything fits in there. It looks like I might need to slot it for a flathead. Bad idea?
Has anyone done this?

Are you planning to reuse the valve stems? If not, hold the backside with a universal wrench (vise grips). Otherwise, take the wheels to a tire shop and they'll have them off in a minute.

Thanks!

It was difficult to get a grip on them.

Only one came out nicely, the rest I drilled from the back.
