Attention - Password and Security Update

Hello all,

Over the next few days we will be implementing some changes to our forum password strength and password expiration policies. To make sure you continue having the best experience possible on the community, we regularly monitor the site and the Internet to keep everyone's account information safe. We've recently become aware of a potential risk to some accounts coming from outside of this community. Just to be safe, we are implementing the following changes to improve security even further:

1) We are asking everyone to change their passwords (and will force a one time reset). Along with every user on the forum, new passwords will need to be more complex, and can't be simple words (sorry, you can't have "fluffy" as your password anymore!). Please use a password unique to this community. Reusing passwords can expose your account indirectly when other websites (Twitter, Linkedin, Badoo, etc) are compromised; and

2) Your passwords will expire on a 365 day basis. When you login on the 366th day, you will have to change it.

We'll also be sending out an email to users to let them know about the changes, in upcoming weeks.

Thanks all,

Helena

Does this have anything to do with this:
45 Million Accounts Hacked At Some Of The Biggest Car Forums

'84 GTV6 which I've owned now for 20 (Is that possible? 2013-1993=20, so, dang! wow) years

Probably. AlfaBB is operated by AutoGuide and VerticalScope. The article says:
Quote:
Visitors to many popular car, sports and tech websites including VWVortex, The Truth About Cars, Pirate 4x4, Focus Fanatics, EvoXForums, and AutoGuide should change their passwords ASAP, reports ZDNet. 45 million accounts hosted on VerticalScope’s 1,100 sites have been compromised by hackers.
But, hacked or not, it's generally a good policy and practice to use unique passwords for sites (and use a random password generator like this one), as well as changing passwords periodically. For convenience, I store the passwords in my browser on computers of which I am the only user.

Unfortunately the article fails to mention that the breach was for a third party plugin. This breach is on countless sites across the internet and not just limited to ours.

This is why we have reached out to the community and have encourage that members change their password, especially if they currently have an easy one.

Thank you so much,

~ Glenda

I use unique Passwords for all my accounts. Can't get anything else from me except the Porsche Forum BIG Deal. My password has been the same since I joined ALFABB. Don't care if I'm found out!! OMG and ALFA and Porsche FORUM. If there are people who use the same passwords to get on Forums like this one and use them for their Bank Account, then they are STUPID!!! They deserve what they get as far as I'm concerned! There are too many IDIOTS and they have NO Common Sense! I know you want to be Helpful, but they should Know Better!

Thanks for the warning Glenda!!

BTW Do I need to pay my dues? Send a PM if so and I will send the Payment!

I understand your point, I think some people find it hard to remember a different password for every site so choosing the same one just helps them remember. However as a precaution make those passwords difficult just to have ease of mind.

I changed my password today. Note that if what you type in as your new password doesn't comply with the new parameters, the screen will just sit there until you type in something that does, then will advance when you click Apply or Update or whatever the go forward prompt is.
Thanks
Andrew

Send a message via AIM to GV27
Just a note to help people out: Check out LastPass password manager. Helps store your (hopefully unique) passwords in one place protected by two-factor authentication.

What do you mean? Can I get a screen shot?
.... Are you talking about your private messages? or visitor messages?

Ah! It looks to me like link spammers were placing visitor messages. This leaves a trail in the search engines (a Google search reveals several users were hit) and it appears visitor messages are not deleted when mods remove the spammers's posts during the banning process.

I changed mine a couple of days ago because of the notice. Today I got a message with a new temporary password, in order to sign in and change it again.

You have to paste in the temporary one in order to change it.

pay attention to the remarks when changing. No short one (miniumu number of positions) , not only capitals, etc etc.
Glad the administrators are paying attention! thanks!
