@spiderserie4, I hadn't considered that the bigger tabs were for coarser threads. I thought it was just an unfortunate design choice. I guess Alfas had different thread pitches for different series.

I've seen photos of S4 engines without the pal nuts. I'm thinking I'll just use locknuts, and torque them to the pal nut value.
