The position of the pinion is set by shims, not by torque. That is why the factory torque requirement is so broad, 60 to 100 ft-lb. I tighten the nut with an impact wrench and I have seen a respected Alfa mechanic use a hammer and punch to tighten one on a race car. I believe that the advice offered by roadtrip originated when folks were unable to lock the flange and use a torque wrench.
