Cool Exhaust Pipe Flange Gasket - Interchange Info

Just spent a frustrating couple of days trying to source an exhaust pipe flange gasket for my Alfa 164L exhaust system. This is the gasket that fits between the rear pipe that exits the catalytic converter and connects with the flange on the center exhaust pipe and muffler assembly.

After ordering a new flange gasket from Alfa Parts in Berkeley (at the eye-watering price of $35.00 for one) and having it get lost in the mail, out of frustration I went to CarQuest Auto Parts (also known as Advance Auto Parts in some places). The CarQuest parts book shows a Bosal #256-203 as the gasket. I had them order a Bosal one and it turned out to be the wrong size - it was too small to fit the exhaust flange bolt layout on my Alfa. It probably fits the flanges on 164S models which have two pipes exiting the rear of the catalytic converter. This afternoon I returned the Bosal gasket and took the actual exhaust pipe and flange with me.

After a few minutes of looking at the exhaust flange gaskets CarQuest had on the shelf, we found a Victor Reinz gasket #7135 which fit perfectly. [This gasket is also known as a Mahle #7135.] I bought two of them for $1.99 each so I would have a spare. As I was paying, I jokingly told the parts man that it sure looked like a small block Chevy exhaust gasket to me. When I got home I "googled" the Victor Reinz #7135 gasket to see what it fit, and sure enough, it turns out our Alfa's use the small block Chevy exhaust gasket! This is the gasket used on all the exhaust heat risers for the Chevy 305ci and 350ci V8 engines made from 1965 to 1985. It was installed on every Chevy model that used those V8's (Blazers, Corvettes, Impalas, El Caminos, Chevelles, etc.)

Online prices for these gaskets are all over the place, from a low of $1.60 each on CARID.com, to a high of $8.88 at WalMart.com. O'Reilly's Auto Parts has them $1.99 each too, which matches what I paid at CarQuest Auto Parts. Sure beats $35.00.

Good to know, thanks.

If it the same as on a 3.0 24v UK spec 164 super, I use Autogem CEG111 gasket rings - they cost about 3 and work as well as any other.

The packet lists other vehicles as BMW 524 TD 1983+, Saab 900 turbo 1978+ and Volvo 760 GLE saloon 1988+, among others.

Other reference part numbers include: GEX446008, SBG5, 374770441 and TS-410199

Hope that helps.

I guess this is the ring you are referencing correct? 164B/L/S/LS/Q rear muffler inlet pipe ring 82407147, also for 164LS/Q center muffler to Cat outlet.

That's the one. Did I understand the query correctly?

For my 164 ls (95) exhaust manifolds to flex pipes, Walker part, around $3-5. I will dig up the number BUT alternate versions may be tight i/d and not sit on the flange properly.

I just used one for a 1986 Volkswagen Cabriolet, perfect fit. There were various VW/Audi fitments that came up as a cross ref for the three bolt flange gasket when I googled the Alfa number.
