Testing AR164/Milano fuel pumps, etc...

Today was the day to do it. I had about five 164 pumps and three GTV6/Milano FI fuel pumps to test.

Equipment:
1 FIRE EXTINGUISHER
2 Battery Charger or 12v battery
3 Test lead wiring
4 Fuel resistant bucket
5 Two-cycle gas mixture (use oil/gas mix to leave a oily film inside pump for preservation)

I tested one complete AR 164 USA steel tank fuel pump assembly and some just non pre filter and pre filter Bosch 0 580 464 990 AR 164 submersible pumps.

I also had three GTV6/Milano inline under body pumps - one a Bosch 0580464013, one a DYNAPEX DP603L and a dead p/n UKN one.

One of the 164 pumps worked sort of but it sprayed fuel around where top crimped into the pump case (so failed).

All the rest of the 164 pumps and two of the Milano pumps passed.

Views of complete 164 fuel pump assembly for USA steel tank configuration.

This unit has Bosch pump 0 580 464 990 with good check valve and pre filter, SAE 30R10 submersible fuel hose better than AR 60777347 OEM hose, good 60572049 rubber pump mounting bushing and a good used 82404491 lower pan rubber anti-vibration rubber pad.

AR 164 fuel pumps w/prefilter and non-filter and check valve info

I think same p/n 0 580 464 990 is same for both pumps but not sure.

Anyway if you are replacing bad prefiltered pump with a pump without one, POP OFF old pre filter off your bad pump and put it on new non-filtered pump.

Pre filtered pumps more desirable because if rubber pump mount bushing flakes off or if you get any grit inside lower fuel pan filter basket you can clog pump impeller lower bearing.

Also save check valve fitting in outlet port and be sure it has ball check, spring and BLACK teflon retainer shown in center of check valve fitting picture. DO NOT test check valve with banjo fitting end cap off because you can blow out retainer, spring and ball.

You need good check valve to hold fuel pressure in engine fuel rail so engine will start quicker since trapped fuel pressure allows injectors to spray fuel as soon as starter turns over engine. If check valve or short hose inside tank cover bad engine will take longer to start or not start at all if you can't build up fuel pressure.

AR 164 fuel pump bushing and bottom pan rubber pad

Lower rubber pad 82404491 seems to come off lower pan very easily and is getting hard to find new ones so save your old one and glue it onto pan with something fuel resistant like JB Weld.

Rubber bushing 60572049 easier to find but getting costly so if possible try to reuse it is not all gooey and flaking apart.

I had to add a neoprene rubber seal under one recently to keep pump from move arond in inner filter basket.

I used a 164 fuel sender top cover gasket to do the sealing but old gasket from a used engine oil filter will work in a pinch.

I also use #10 or #12 statoseal washers from Home Depot on tank cover bolts and use SAE 30R10 submersible fuel hose inside tank cover.

NAPA NBH H209 5/16" or Gates 27093 meet this SAE 39R10 spec.

Happy Fuel Pumping to you!

Trying to find correct p/n for M10x1.0 threaded check vlave for 164

Seems like the Bosch 0580464990 fuel pump used on the 164 has a M10x1.0 fine threaded outlet and most Bosch check valves have M12x1.5 threads on both ends. Whereas the check valve for 164 pump has M10x1.0 on pump end and M12x1.5 on end for banjo fitting.

Bosch check valve p/n 1587010536

Wow - great info. Did you ever find a part number for the correct check valve?

Yes, Bosch 1587010536 or Ferrari 169591.
