Spider clutch replacement?

What is the best way to replace a spider veloce clutch. Remove engine? Remove trans? Car has 78K and it is getting mushy. I never attempted anything this drastic, but could possibly handle it with the right help from all of you.

You don't need to remove the engine, but it does help to tilt the engine a little bit. This way, after you disconnect the tranny from the driveshaft, it will be easier to get it out. It helps a lot to have a transmission jack, and of course, you will need a clutch alignment tool in addition to usual tools. There are several threads on the BB about changing the clutch so I would suggest you do a search.

Best regards,

Before you throw parts & labor at it, what do you mean by 'mushy'? Maybe it just needs the clutch hydraulics flushed & bled or the master/slave rebuilt (&/or a new flex hose, too)? None of those tasks require removing the engine or transmission.

Are you noticing crunchy shifts - especially from 1st to 2nd? Some have reported marked improvement of synchro action by using the oil's specified by Alfa. Again, no engine/transmission removal required!

Eric, Yes I get a crunch from 1st to 2nd and sometimes to 3rd. Also at the stop light, I have to come to a complete stop before shifting back into 1st. It also seemed when I dropped it into 4th to pass someone and I step on the gas, or up a hill in 5th, I get what seems to be slip. I'll try the other ideas first!
