'84 Spider Trans OHaul DIY?

I'm looking to buy an '84 Spider to fix up.It has 74k miles showing and a bad 2nd gear synchro.

I have repaired BMW, Porsche, etc boxes in the past. Is the Alfa box rebuildable without allot of specialized gear?

Are parts reasonable and available? With 74K miles, is this a synchro ring replacement job or a complete overhaul?

The trans is very simple to repair. A press is helpful to get the mainshaft apart and back to gether again.

Before condeming the trans you might try changing the oil. You might be surprised.

A Simple job to overhaul, most parts available, do not lose the interlock bullets or beans from the change rods.

Definitely try an oil change first. Many guys here swear by Redline's oil, but I use either Kendall's Nitro 70w or Valvoline's Racing 60w (both motor oils) in my Spider gearboxes with great results. Other synthetics, or even worse, Teflon or Moly additives can really wreck an Alfa gearbox, so don't be tempted by the snake oil vendors.

I just pulled the trans to do a clutch job and replace the rear mount, but I left the 2nd gear crunch that I have alone. I have been driving it for 2 years now, and can hit the right spot to get it in gear evry time now. I would double clutch and enjoy, until you need to pull the trans for something else. Just my opinion, but I believe shared by many on the board.
