But Now, Im in a nother jam.....cant put the rear cover back on...seem to remember someone here advised a while back, that to remove, it needs to be in 3rd gear. Same thing for assembly, 3rd gear?

Also, defective rubber "donut" for drive line has holes in aluminum that are too tight.....bolts wont even go in, except for 1st inch or so. IAP says to file /sand down a tad. Sheesh!! Talk about out of spec junk being sold!!!!!!!!

(gonna get my son bigpapajoe to ream it down with sand paper..........)

Yes, shift rods have to be placed in 3rd gear.

Earlier gearboxes (60's?) had a rear layshaft bearing for which the outer race was pressed in the rear cover. Later gearboxes have a bearing which stays in one piece on the layshaft; the rear cover just slips on.

Refitting the cover on the early type is very tricky, as the rollers fall out of place and catch on the outer lip of the race. They have to be packed with sticky grease to stay in place and allow the race to slip in place as the cover is installed.

Check that you don't have the early type of bearing.

Thanks, Montreal. Figured out like when removing, needs to be in 3rd gear, no problem. Also, sanded down those holes just a tad, wrapped med grit (about 80) sandpaper around a drill bit, and gave each hole a few spins, and checked in intervals. Worked out OK.

Forgot to mention...

Each time I took a rear cover off, I removed the two side caps that hold the shift lever in place. It gives the lever more free play to fall in place while you're engaging the cover on the many obstructions. I don't remember if the cover will come off with the caps in place.

The caps are shimmed and there are wavy washers in there, make sure you note down where everything goes. But nothing will pop out, reassembly is straightforward.

Back to original issue of detents....update:

Car shifting excellently, now. No more popping out of 1st gear, and grinding either!! Wow!

Guess the bent detent for 1st/2nd gear shift fork was the culprit, as the detent ball was not seating in right, allowing the popping out. This time, I loctited those 2 wimpy screws down, so detents stay in place.......
