last bolt

Ok down to the last bolt ( bottom starter motor). I can see the trans starting to pull away from the engine. Got bolt loose but just too tired to finish. Will get the last bolt out then, disconnect the fan shroud and see about jacking the engine up. The trans jack really helps, because now I dont have to worry about the weight of the trans on the shaft.

Ok guys, I'm officially mid-transmission-pull also. Yesterday I disconnected the drive shaft, removed the transmission mount, and started on the console...

So I have a question: I've read that fully pulling the console is not necessary, that all work can be done from underneath... Has anyone here done that? What are the real steps?

Console

If you look at the first picture in this thread you can see that all I really did was loosen the console from the floor, and unscreww the top, and heater bezel, left all the electrical connected and just held it aside as I removed the stick shift boots, and stick shift.

bit by bit

Ok tired tonight, but got something done. I loosened the fan shroud, by undoing the top bolts, and hopefully ( someone can tell me if I'm wrong) this will give me enough clearance, for the fan to rise, when I jack up the front of the engine to slide the trans off. This is the tip that I read about to let the trans clear the floor, of the car. I love dem threads wit da picturs

Last bolt out but watch out!!

Got the last bolt out from the starter, and jacked up the engine. Take close look at the picture of my hoses. This is something you need to watch out for

I knew to watch out for my radiator hoses , but didn't expect the air hose to pop out, so keep an eye them and I would recommend loosening the air hose.

I jacked it up almost till it touched the fire wall , and I think it can go a little more, the trans seems to be stuck on the studs, but I'm going to take a break for a few and try later to get er loose.

Well, I got my transmission out... Didn't run into the same problems you ran into gadwhite, since I took out my airbox to get at the top, left-side bell bolt, and the air hose to the oil separator has plenty of play.

I took mine out because of a grinding sound that, from other posts here, seemed to relate to the throw-out bearing.

Sure enough, my throw-out bearing has a big chunk missing on one of the flats:

So, that'll need to be replaced, and I ordered a new rubber boot (as you can see mine is torn), and a new clutch kit too, since I'm in there anyway.

However, with the transmission on my bench, when I grab the input shaft and turn it by hand, in neutral or in gear, there is a definite grinding feel to it. Granted, it's got no oil in it... Anyone want to give me advice as to if that grind is enough to require a full rebuild? There doesn't seem to be any play in the shaft.

Congratulations gent's.

You inspire me. The transmission jack arrives on tuesday or wednesday, I hope. Then I'll finally get mine out.

Better late than never!

Good Job all.

Found the problem

Pulled my pressure plate and the first thing I noticed when I loosened the bolts was no spring in the plate. found out when I got it off that the Clutch Plate had seperated from the cover springs.

My clutch itself has a little bit left on it.

a few burn spots on the Clutch plate, probably because it was loose.

Flywheel looks ok few burn spots, but no damage/Cracks

It's out. I win, finally.

The Harbor Freight Transmission Jack did the trick. Oh, and I found another nut still screwed on, so, that was why I could not get it to come off earlier. Right above the slave cylinder. DOH! Where have I heard that before?

15 minutes and it was OFF!

Out it goes for it's rebuild...

gadwhite, regarding post #38, pic #4, what is that washer looking thing on the front of your throwout bearing?

Do you have a special clutch and pressure plate or something? I don't recall seeing anything like that in any book or replacement part, nor when I had mine apart last year. (I could be utterly mistaken mind you)

You'll likely want to measure the thickness on the friction plate as even when brand new they look a bit on the thin side.

Spec wear limit is 6mm/.24" and ensure that the rivets don't rub regardless of thickness

Oh, and just that freindly reminder that if the flywheel comes off, make sure you index it properly upon reinstall or you'll be getting more practice dropping the trans to fix it.

Tifosi thanks for the info.
You know I've been wondering why my throwout looks different,so I'll post some close ups with that question. The new one looks like everyone elses. The old one does seem to have marked the pressure plate though.

Im not aware of having a special setup/pressure plate

I will also be ordering a new friction plate even though I still have good clearance for the rivets, because its so much work to skimp on a new $66 part(IAP).

Going to leave the fly wheel, but replace the pilot busshing.

Stay tuned, more pictures coming...

Gabriel

Don't forget you might need a reamer for that pilot bushing once it's installed.
