Trans project finally started

Yanking gearbox out Saturday, removed interior console and stuff already.

Wondering, what is easiest way to remove the inner rubber boot on stick shift? From top, inside cab, or other? Its kinda tight, having to loosen that sideways bolt that holds clamp. I mean, how does one place a screwdriver in that tight spot hidden behind the other stiffer "rubber collar"? Thanks guys!

Joe

Wow

Im at exactly the same spot. I did use a little ArmourAll on the shaft when I took off the first boot, so tomorrow I'm going to try that trick with the last boot. I peeled the top back on the first large boot and got a little down around the neck and it helped. Also plan to pick up a trans jack from Harbor Freight ( $59).

Great, Gad! I got mine out from on top......long screwdriver, at an angle...pretty easy actually. Good luck with the rest of the work!

OK, 2 questions:

1)When we pulled out trans/bellhousing, I heard clingitty cling-clangity. The clutch fork just dropped out and bounced on floor. So, now, Im looking for that spring/nut and NOTHING ANYWHERE!! Is it posible to drive/shift OK without this spring???????? Cuz, I think it fell out, cuz it is nowhere in the garage floor!! Advice pls!!!!

So now i have no spring! Or the nut, for that matter. I think Vicks sells springs, but anyone have a nut around you can spec out for me so I can buy locallY?

2) Anyone know thread diam/pitch for the threaded end of the layshaft in gearbox? Believe it or not, when I opened up my gearbox(split it), that nut and washer fel out!!! Gees, what is going on here?! So, it is now striped, and I need to to re tap it/dye it.

Thanks!

Joe

gad,

How did the jack workout? I looked at the one that I think that you got and it looked a bit wobbly. I opted for the hydraulic jack for $79.00(store sale). I've found lots of uses for the trans jack when working under the car.
