3rd rubber boot?

1981 Spider 2000 USA

The question is about rubber shift boots on my 5 speed transmission.

It looks like I need the giant rubber boot with the big hole in it, and wide flanges on the side (photo on the bottom, white arrow). It's hard to forensically reconstruct melted and sticky old boot parts correctly.

Any ideas as to what it's called or better yet, where can I get a new one?

It's tough to make out from your picture - it's a bit blurry - but it doesn't look like the old boot is all that bad. These things don't really fit the gearbox shift tower very well. Others may disagree, but I have never been able to get all of these boots to all fit at the same time - it seems that they all want to occupy the same volume.

If you have a large budget and are a glutton for punishment, you could try to source a new boot from one of the UK or German parts suppliers. But don't be surprised if you need to trim it until it looks like your old one before it will all fit.

Seems that someone else had a thread going about this topic in the past month or so. It may have been on the Spider or GTV forum.

It's the bottom one, isn't it? I put a new one in mine even though it turned out that when I lifted the console up, I didn't really need it. I put it in anyway. The other photo is the top boot for the junior's isn't it. It's when you don't have the leather type with a console.

Here is what I posted in the Spider section earlier:

It looks like I need the giant rubber boot with the big hole in it, and wide flanges on the side (photo on the bottom, white arrow). It's the Transmission Rubber Boot that fits just beneath the stamped-metal shift housing.

The top is torn, rotted and sticky. Is the center part of it missing, or is this the way it normally looks?

Any ideas as to where can I get a new one?

I suppose this part is OK to reuse, it does not look critical, but I would like to have fresh parts.

I have not seen it in any parts catalog either. The Inner and Outer Boots are available everywhere, but this rubber hump thing is AWOL.
I think it's main purpose is to act as a gasket between the floor sheet-metal and the stamped metal shift hump protecting the carpet and padding. It conforms closely to the inside of the stamped metal shift hump, but also rises’ up-and-out of the top. The top lip is the bad bit I might be able to mod. But it is still a mystery as to what the top looks like.

NICE idea though! I might have stolen that idea from you and claimed it as my own in the old days. But, today I'm trying to make this thing as close as I can to 'Factory' specs. I've been known to use rubber bands for a throttle spring in the past. So, good job! We are kindred spirits with the home-spun parts.

Might want to try Vick's Auto sports, in Texas for the boots......just priced them and they are quite a bit lower cost than IAP...synchro rings were 29.50 at Vick's, and 44+ at IAP. See what I mean??

Centerline has / had the "big boot" available earlier this year, but it is not cheap (about $80 or so). I've never seen other sources for this particular boot, though.

I am struggling with the same issue right now. I noticed that my padding/insulation had gear oil on it. Looks like several years worth. Do you have any pictures of the fit of the new boot/gasket? I think that I may be able to salvage mine but I would really like to see how the new one fits.

I am not looking foreword to cleaning up the mess in there!
