speedodmeter gear insertion

I'm putting the transmission rear case on my 79 spider and have it all together except the speedometer gear. I tried to insert the gear but can't get the darn thing in.
Is there a trick...should I have put the gear in place before I put the spider with the drive gear on it?
please help.

a search of the B.B. solved the problen. I had replaced the drive spider with it's drive gear and it was of a different year so the ratios were wrong. when I put in the old spider it fit with the gear on the speedo just right.
Thanks to the B.B. I'll remember to search past threads before starting a new one next time.
