noise at high rpms in 1,2,3 gear

I just drove the 89 spider veloce I purchased for the first time. (yes I know. you didn't drive it before you bought it? long story) In 1st, 2nd, and 3rd when I get to high rpms it sounds as if something is rattiling or loose, almost like an out of balance drive shaft. The guy I bought it from said that this is a common problem with these cars and never bothered to fix it. He said it was a syncro problem but this doesn't really make since to me since the car is already in gear when it does it and shifts fine. The car only has 40,000 miles on it. Any ideas? I don't know a lot about these cars. obviously

I think an out-of-balance shaft you would also feel. I have had exaust baffling that was nocked loose in old muffler rattle at high rpm. I doubt you would be able to hear a syncro problem unless gears were grinding but that would be a diferent noise and throughout the rev band I would think.?.? It sounds like something is lust loose and vibrating.?.?

I have the same problem. I put her up on jacks and it sounds like its coming from the middle muffler. Sounds like something inside of that muffler is rattling around. Taking her to muffler man first.

It's very difficult to diagnose something like this on the BB... If you are new, I would strongly suggest that you find a good Alfa mechanic, and use him until you feel you are coming up to speed (which could be very quick). I mean, by paying for an hour of labor to at least find out what is going on, you could avoid a much more costly problem. The BB has many examples of people not detecting things in time, and then suffering as a consequence...

Best regards,

I drove it after work tonight and it sounds and kind of feels like it may be a slipping clutch. I think this problem would most likely be present at the bottom end of the rpm range but its not. I'm thinking possibly out of balance driveshaft or bad cv joint. I'll crawl underneath this weekend to see what I can find.

if it only happens in first three gears problem may be cluster gear bearings, does it make the noise in 5th gear? $th gear is direct drive and there is no load on the cluster gear bearings. also make sure there is oil in the trans.
