Angry 164 Clutch Question

Hi,

A couple days ago, the clutch in my '95 Quad started making a noise when the clutch pedal is depressed. Not terribly loud, but you can hear it. It shifts fine, no problem going into 1st gear from a stop, or any other shifting process.

Has about 127,000 miles on it, I don't know when/if the clutch has ever been done (I bought it in '03).

Thanks,
~ Doug

Explain the noise a bit futher? Metal to Metal? Squeeky noise? what?
Does it chatter? is the clutch hard to depress?

I’ll bet that the sound you’re talking about is a bit difficult to describe, but very noticeable. Let me try: not real loud, but it sounds like wind is blowing through. Not a whistle, but sort of a raspy noise, and it happens as soon as you press on the clutch pedal. It’s disconcerting because nothing feels different, but the noise is consistent and persistent. If such is the case, prepare yourself for a new clutch.

Best regards,

Yes, you're exactly right about the sound of the noise - hard to describe, not loud but troubling.

Anyway, it happened today. Our beloved Alfa tried to kill us! We were waiting to pull out into two way traffic on a highway, when without further warning, the engine unceremoniously merged with 1st gear. Thankfully, I had my foot firmly on the brake, so instead of meeting other cars violently, it just stalled. It was a very sudden failure - one minute normal (except for the noise), then -BLAM!-

I've brought all my Alfas to Alfas Unlimited since my very first one (1975). They're an outstanding shop. So, soon this one will be on a flatbed, headed out to the beautiful mountains of Norfolk, CT. Keith thinks it might be a slave or master cylinder, based on my description of it on the phone this afternoon.

Thanks for the responses, guys. Much appreciated. Alfa owners are the best people.
